This same capacity allowed us to create stories to define us, explain our place in the world, and help us cope with the inevitable and incomprehensible aspects of existence: Where do we come from? Why are we here? Where are we going? These uniquely human skills have helped us survive and thrive. In just a dozen generations, they have enabled us to overcome immense challenges and ultimately dominate the planet.
We no longer fight lions with sticks and stones. We have learned to cure most of the diseases that once killed us. We can technically feed and educate everyone. We can travel beyond our planet. And we even possess the power to destroy it.
So why are we divided by tribalism, superstition, and mistrust?
The speed and scale of human progress have been staggering, yet we now struggle to reconcile the stories that once defined us, with what we know about the current world.
And unfortunately, instead of adapting our ethical and moral frameworks to reflect our advancements and shared experiences, we tend to use the extraordinary power of human storytelling and imagination to defend and justify narratives that defy logic, fairness, and common sense.
In doing so, we fuel confusion, division, and conflict…
Fortunately, we don’t have to look far for guidance. Thanks to our ability to think abstractly and pass on knowledge across time, the wisdom of past thinkers and philosophers remains accessible.
Their insights combined with simple common sense, offer us a way forward. Rich traditions of humanistic philosophy, including Stoicism, Enlightenment, and Existencialism, have already helped shape humanity’s progress and continue to provide valuable guidance to navigate the challenges of the present and build a future grounded in reason and meaningful purpose.
Mundus Humanus provides a set of ten principles, based on human experience and humanistic philosophy, designed to help anyone live a human life, with purpose and fulfillment.
These principles include actions, that most of us already practice in our daily life, and perspectives on the world around us and the things we can’t control but can handle when we choose to accept them.
The ten human principles are grouped in sets of five actions and five principles to make them easier to remember.
